Warning! These 3 Asian Countries Are High-Risk for Indonesian Migrant Worker Exploitation

The Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Abdul Kadir Karding, has urged the public to be cautious about job offers in three Asian countries—Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar—which do not have official labor placement agreements (MoUs) with Indonesia. He described these countries as the most extreme destinations due to the high number of cases involving Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) who end up exploited, trafficked, or even dead.

One of the latest cases involved Rizal Sampurna, a resident of Banyuwangi, who died in Cambodia after working through unofficial channels. He entered the country by sea from Malaysia and was not registered in the official government system. Many PMIs like Rizal are recruited through social media, promised high salaries, but end up trapped in illegal networks, such as online scams and forced labor.

Karding also revealed a growing new scheme involving sending PMIs using tourist visas and unofficial routes via Malaysia or Thailand. He emphasized the importance of not being lured by job offers with unclear legal status. The government urges prospective migrant workers to always use official channels to avoid the risks of trafficking and abuse.

Deputy Manpower Minister Rebukes HR Representative Who Called 2025 Job Fair Just Formality

A job fair held in Bekasi in May 2025 attracted numerous job seekers and went viral after a video showed an HR representative claiming the event was merely a formality for companies. The statement sparked controversy on social media and public concern.

Deputy Minister of Manpower Immanuel Ebenezer deemed the comment highly irresponsible. He stressed that job fairs are important opportunities for job seekers to find decent work and demanded strict sanctions against the HR representative to uphold the integrity of the recruitment process.

Previously, the Ministry of Manpower held a job fair in Jakarta on May 22–23, 2025, open to all job seekers with official registration through the Karirhub platform. Additionally, the Tangerang Regency Government successfully organized Naker Fest 2025, which featured dozens of companies and thousands of job openings to reduce unemployment.

The Deputy Minister reminded all parties to maintain public trust in job fairs as legitimate avenues for employment. He hopes this viral incident serves as a lesson in maintaining transparency and professionalism in recruitment.
