APINDO stated that Gen Z has become the largest contributor to unemployment in Indonesia. Around 67% of total unemployed individuals in the country come from the 15–29 age group, equivalent to approximately 4.9 million people.
APINDO explained that many of them choose to work in the informal sector or the gig economy—which tends to be vulnerable and less stable—rather than obtaining formal employment.
Although official data shows a decline in the national unemployment rate, APINDO criticized the definition of “employment” in the statistics, which allows someone to be considered employed even if they work only one hour per week. This is seen as masking the real situation, where many are “absorbed” into jobs with minimal working hours and low stability that may not meet their long-term career expectations.
