Indonesia’s Social Security Agency on Health (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial/BPJS) is an institution established by the Indonesian government to provide social security to all people, including workers. This institution, which consists of two main programs, plays a vital role in ensuring the welfare and health of the workforce in Indonesia.
With the aim of offering maximum protection to workers, the two main programs of BPJS Indonesia are BPJS Kesehatan (health) and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (employment). BPJS Kesehatan provides access to quality health services for all workers, while BPJS Ketenagakerjaan focuses on protecting workers from risks that may arise due to work accidents, old age, and death. Both programs allow workers to work with peace of mind without having to think about health costs or other risks.
In this article, we will discuss the various components of the two BPJS programs and their benefits. With a better understanding of the rights and benefits of BPJS, it is hoped that workers can be more optimal in utilizing the facilities provided by the government.
Becoming a BPJS Kesehatan participant is an obligation for all Indonesian Citizens (Warga Negara Indonesia/WNI), including Foreign Citizens (warga negara asing/WNA) who have resided in Indonesia for more than 6 months. The benefits offered by BPJS Kesehatan include:
BPJS Kesehatan members receive complete benefit coverage in various health services, including primary care, specialist services, hospitalization, surgery, and prescription drugs.
Not only that, the program also covers preventive health services, such as immunizations and health screenings. Workers, also known as Wage Recipient Workers (Pekerja Penerima Upah/PPU), receive BPJS Kesehatan by sharing contributions between employers and employees. The premium amount is set as a percentage of the worker’s monthly salary before taxes and fixed allowances. However, there is a maximum salary limit used for premium calculation.
For private employees, the BPJS Kesehatan premium is calculated as a percentage of the employee’s monthly salary. The applicable premium rates are as follows:
However, there is a maximum limit to the salary subject to the premium, which is IDR12,000,000. Thus, even if the employee’s salary is higher than this limit, the premium will still be calculated based on a salary of IDR12,000,000. Here is an illustration.
Example 1: Private Employee with a Salary of IDR10,000,000
Total Premium: 5% of Rp10,000,000 = Rp500,000
Paid by Employer: 4% of IDR10,000,000 = IDR400,000
Paid by Employee: 1% of IDR10,000,000 = IDR100,000
Example 2: Private Employee with Salary IDR15,000,000
Total Premium: 5% of IDR12,000,000 = IDR600,000 (with a salary cap of IDR12,000,000)
Paid by Employer: 4% of IDR12,000,000 = IDR480,000
Paid by Employee: 1% of IDR12,000,000 = IDR120,000
